Research projects

PostDoc research project

The Australian auger and furniture beetles (Bostrichidae and Ptinidae: Anobiinae): resolving morphological and molecular relationships of economically and environmentally important insect groups (DAFF Grant, $450,000).

  • Integrative taxonomy based on morphology and molecular data (high-throughput collection genomics).

  • Taxonomic revision of ~80 Australian bostrichid species; generic revision of Australian anobiids (paper and book chapters in prep.).

  • New image and genomic database, including a comprehensive DNA reference library of ~650 expertly determined specimens.

  • Diagnostic tools for efficient biosecurity monitoring.

PhD research project

Phylogenomics and macroevolution of hyperdiverse darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

  • Project 1: Evolution across the adaptive landscape in a hyperdiverse beetle radiation (genomic datasets of 332 taxa representing 80% Australian genera; resolving long-standing inconsistency over the higher-level classification of the family; paper published in Current Biology).

  • Project 2: Miocene aridification as the driver to a continental adaptive radiation (paper in prep.).

  • Project 3: Speciation, biogeography, and taxonomy of flightless Apterotheca beetles on ‘sky islands’ of the Australian Wet Tropics (molecular datasets of 450 taxa; paper in prep., including descriptions of new taxa).

Master research project

Phylogeny, taxonomy, and biogeography of net-winged beetles (Coleoptera: Lycidae) in the eastern Palearctic and Oriental regions (collaboration with Prof. Ladislav Bocak, Palacky University, Czech Republic).

  • Target sampling across 51 nature reserves in China, establishing the beetle ethanol collection at Sun Yat-sen Uni Museum.

  • Taxonomic revisions of Chinese lycid fauna, including descriptions of two new genera and 27 new species.

  • A molecular dataset of ~800 taxa in the Sanger era.

  • Species delimitation and biogeography of micro-endemic lycids in Asia.

Other research projects

Developing molecular markers to resolve the higher-level phylogenies of beetles (collaboration with Prof. Peng Zhang, Sun Yat-sen University, China; papers published).

Testing the ring species hypothesis in the Alauda skylark species complex using multilocus data (collaboration with Prof. Yang Liu, Sun Yat-sen University, China; Dr. Elisa Dierickx, Cambridge University, UK; Prof. Per Alstrom, Uppsala University, Sweden).
